ABOUT

OF GLAWYERS.
BY GLAWYERS.
FOR GLAWYERS.

Government and Laws Committee, The University of Hong Kong (GLC) is the flagship official student community of the BSocSc (Govt&Laws) & LLB Programme at The University of Hong Kong.

GLC is heir to a cosmopolitan tradition harking back to the appointment of the eminent British jurist George Keeton as HKU’s inaugural Lecturer in Political Science and Jurisprudence in 1924, and the society he helped establish with his Law and Politics students shortly afterwards. Few student bodies in Hong Kong can claim an older pedigree.

Today, GLC is unquestionably one of the most widely acclaimed law students’ organisations in the region, committed to the non-partisan study of law and public affairs. Bringing together students, practitioners, and experts from all over the world,

GLC promotes robust debates about cutting-edge legal and policy problems that lie at the nexus of the international and domestic levels. GLC is home to two globally recognised publications: The Hong Kong Journal of Law and Public Affairs and Public Jurist, that routinely feature contributions from distinguished judges and prominent diplomats, produced solely by BSocSc (Govt&Laws) & LLB students in the English language.

GLC works closely with the Department of Politics and Public Administration and the Faculty of Law to delivers customised services to BSocSc (Govt&Laws) & LLB students, such as mentorship schemes and examination support tailor-made to their special needs, offered like nowhere else.

THE Glaws EMBLEM

The lion is the mascot of The University of Hong Kong (HKU). The inclusion of the lion into the Crest of the GLC, also known as the "GLaws Crest", reinforces the close ties between GLC and HKU. The lion symbolises the qualities of the ideal GLaws student: courage, stateliness, and determination. The raised paw stands for GLC’s boldness to initiate and to inquire as well as a readiness to serve. The tail held high reminds of the importance of ideals.

The letters "G & L" stand for "Government & Laws". The scales and the sword represent the principle that public power (the sword) ought to be exercised fairly, in accordance with the rule of law (the scales).

The shield signifies that GLaws is a stronghold made up of young people who are committed to the public interest and the rule of law.

The GLaws Crest was designed by Dr. Eric C. Ip, Associate Professor of Law and Director of the BSocSc (Govt & Laws) & LLB Programme at The University of Hong Kong. Dr. Ip himself is a graduate of the HKU GLaws programme (Class of 2008).
